Summer is winding down. I hate that sentence. Don’t get me wrong! I love the Fall – the start of hockey season (Mine, the kids, and the NHL!); the changing leaves; Halloween activities; and, Thanksgiving! But, then comes winter… short days, and slushy roads… Enough of this depressing line of thinking! The point is – Summer isn’t over yet! So, if you’re within a five hour drive of Lake George, NY, might I suggest a weekend roast trip?
The Lake!

Lake George has pristine, clear water, and, it’s really comfortable in late August! The trip would be worth it for the jet skiing, parasailing, or tubing, alone.
Want to feel like you stepped into the movie Dirty Dancing? Check out the town of Lake George…
Not in that dated way where something is nostalgic because it hasn’t updated in decades. Instead, in some hybrid way, wherein half of the town is full of high-tech, very modern experiences, alongside the things that you’d have found there in the 1980’s, or before.
Then, step waaaayyyyy back in time…

We decided to visit Fort William Henry’s (all ages) “Ghost Tour.” Whether you care for ghost hunting, or not, it is a very other-worldly experience to visit the fort in the calm, stillness of night. The fort has an utterly tragic history that feels more appropriate to learn about in the depths of darkness. Your tour guide is not someone looking to find ghosts in every corner. Instead, it is a historian with an intense grasp of the fort’s history. It was also nice to experience the fort in the coolness of evening, away from intense sun, and the large daytime crowds.

Our lodging recommendation…

We stayed at the Tiki Resort. If this is your splurge for the summer, then, don’t stay at our hotel recommendation. In fact, don’t stay at Lake George, if you are looking to splurge on some lavish hotel. Perhaps, you’d be better served staying at Saratoga Springs? I couldn’t tell you where you should stay in Lake George, if the goal is to spend a lot on a one or two night road trip to Lake George – this was a last minute summer day trip for us. We were looking for “cheap and safe.” What we got was cheap and pleasantly surprising!

With a 7.3 rating, and a cost of $97/nt (I see it popping up for $77/nt, as of this writing), I wasn’t expecting a comfy bed – but the bed was way better than we have found at hotels that cost us twice as much. I wasn’t expecting a nice, clean pool – but, it was an impeccably clean, full size, pool. There was also a really affordable restaurant, called “Paradise Grill.” Some of the reviews considered the Tiki Resort to be in need of “updating;” we sharply disagreed.

The owners appear to have been consistently updating and refurbishing as time passes. However, they have kept the theme of a Polynesian tiki resort, which likely dates back to the 1950’s. Due to the fact that they have continued to update the resort, it’s actually a really neat, almost Disney-esque atmosphere… just without any mice of any kind – and it’ll cost you a whole lot less cheddar to stay ( I know – terrible dad joke)!
